Winter can be dreary, cold, and miserable. So, what more excuse do you need to cheer yourself up with a bit of clothes shopping? But what do you go for in winter?

Classic is back

A lot of recent fashion trends have focused on urban wear or streetwear. But this year classic elegance and sophistication are the name of the fashion game. The suit, in all its myriad forms, is very much back at the heart of daily style in menswear. Tweed and corduroy are great choices as, not only are they in once again, but they help keep you warm on a cold day. And if you thought elbow patches were a thing of the past, think again. They’re back on the fashion scene along with those wide lapels you thought you’d seen the last of. But if you still prefer the sleek perfection of a well-made tailored suit, fear not. You still can’t go wrong with it.

Complementary coats

Coats are a huge part of winter fashion so don’t fall into the trap of hiding your style under any old overcoat. The choice of coats out there is huge, and you will be able to find something that complements your style. You just need to know what you’re looking for. Natural shades are in this year so any earthy color will look great. Sporty jackets and parkas are also popular but make sure you try the coat on with the outfit you aim to wear it with. If possible, go for a coat which fits any style that you wear. But don’t force it. It’s better to have two coats and always look great than to have one coat and spend half the winter not looking your best. Think classic and they’ll last so you can look at the purchase of a second coat as an investment.

Cover your neck

You’ve got a choice here; scarf or turtleneck. You could go for both, but you must go for at least one. Scarves were the biggest accessory at all the major fashion shows this winter and once again it’s all about contrast. This is your chance to add a bit of color to your outfit. But keep it conservative. Anything too bright or bold will look odd at this time of year so think natural colors; burgundy, mustard, bottle green, etc. If you opt for the turtleneck you can’t go wrong with the timeless black. Worn with a jacket or blazer and a pair of smart pants it ticks all the boxes in terms of classic design. But don’t be tempted to buy a bold turtleneck, let the accessories add a splash of color.
